3 Tricks to Motherhood. (So Far)

I have so very much to learn, but here are three tricks that have helped me down this parenting road.

1. Routine

I know, I know, this is not a fun one. It ties you down and ruins plans when you have to put your child down for a nap instead of going to out play. But kids have temper tantrums when they are tired or hungry (and sometimes just to mess with us, ha!) This way you know when your little sweetheart might turn into a sleepy monster that needs to be fed. You know when bath time will be fun or end in tears, or if going to the grocery store will be productive or a lesson in frustration. At the same time, rules can bend for special occasions, right?

2. Fun

If mom’s happy, everyone’s happy. There are days when I pull myself out of bed, the rest of the day stretching out before me, and wonder just how I’m going to stay awake. Mothers are human; we have bad days too. But if I can manage to get myself out of the dark mood, turn on some music and start dancing with my kid then I feel better, and so does he. If I can get him giggling, maybe my grimace will turn into a smile. It’s not always easy and I fail often, but laughter is the best medicine and creates beautiful childhood memories.

3. Distraction

“Hey look a bunny! Over there.” My mom used this when we were crying kids and now uses it on my son. You know what? It works. I’ve found other forms of distraction than bunnies. One of my favorite methods is fun. You gotta love combining tricks!

One night my kid was over-tired (see trick number one) so I started tickling him. The screams turned into laughter. Then every time he wanted to yell, I would do it again. He ended up falling asleep happy instead of angry. I walked out of his room into the bright light with a smile on my face.

Of course, there exceptions to these tricks. Each child is different, but they have worked for me, and I hope they work for you, too.

  1. Great tips! Our trick number 4 is: Roll with it! Sometimes a teething day, or a sneaky little cold will throw off naps and eating, and instead of waiting for crabby cakes to give all of the troubles that lack of routine can bring, I just have such an easier day if I can remind myself to ‘roll with it’ and know this is just today! Tomorrow will be here soon… 🙂

  3. Besides prayer, my best parenting trick is “Work on Yourself.” I believe that everything we do flows from who we are. As our heart change, our actions changes. As we become more in tune with ourselves, we can recognize our patterns better–similar to your “Routine” trick, but in a more self-reflective way. We don’t have to work so hard at managing our reactions to life’s stressors, including our children, if we’ve been proactive in developing healthy internal landscapes–our minds, wills, emotions, etc.
